The upswept horn and the antler-like branches give the piece its name: a white hart is a creature of old Scottish and heraldic legend, a pale stag glimpsed at the edge of the wood. Bruce carried that resonance into the timber without ever making it literal.
He worked with the natural grain and growth of the wood, letting the figure twist upward from a hollow, wave-like base so the whole piece seems caught mid-movement, motion held in stillness. It stands among his wood and bronze sculptures, alongside Icarus Unwinged and the Dancing Cranes.
