The Cat and Venus

Etching

The Cat and Venus, an etching by Bruce Thomson of a falling figure with Venus above and a cat at the foot, the fable written out beneath

The Cat and Venus illustrates Aesop's fable of the cat that Venus turned into a woman, only for the creature to chase a mouse across the bridal chamber and betray its nature.

The moral, that nature outlasts nurture, gives Bruce a subject full of movement, poised between woman and animal. Its companion, Venus and the Cat, sits beside it among his Aesop's fables etchings.
