The Cat and the Ailing Birds illustrates Aesop's fable of the cat who, dressed as a doctor, calls on the sick birds to ask after their health, a visit the birds are wise enough to refuse.

The lesson, to beware an enemy who feigns kindness, gives Bruce a sly, watchful subject. It sits with his other Aesop's fables etchings, including The Wolf & the Crane.
